Taking care of your winter clothes is important if you want them to last from season to season. A few simple tricks will keep your clothes looking fresh and clean. Depending on how often you wear your winter clothes, taking proper care of them will extend their lifespan. Here are some wash and care tips to help you:
HAND-WASH ALL HAND-KNITTED SWEATERS AND SCARVES
Hand-wash your delicate clothes with a small amount of dish soap. They don’t need much, and the soap won’t damage the fibers. Taking the time to hand wash your sweaters and scarves will help them maintain their shape and appearance. However, do not twist these clothes as that can harm the fabric.
MACHINE WASH DOWN JACKETS
Machine-wash your down jackets with cold water once or twice in the winter to keep them smelling fresh. Unless you get really dirty, you shouldn’t have to worry about washing them in more than that.
RE-WEAR SWEATERS, PAJAMAS, AND JEANS
Your sweaters, pajamas, and jeans don’t need to be washed every time you wear them unless you notice they are dirty or have stains on them. In most cases, you should be able to wear these items two or three times before you have to wash them. Just be mindful of odors and or dirt spots.
WEAR LAYERS
Wear a light t-shirt under your sweater for added comfort and warmth. Wearing a t-shirt under a sweater will also keep it away from your skin, so you won’t have to wash it as often.
TREAT SALT AND SLUSH STAINS IMMEDIATELY
Treat stains from salt and slush immediately, so they don’t have a chance to set in. This will also prevent the fabric from being damaged.
SHAPE YOUR SWEATERS
When you wash your sweaters, lay them on a towel to dry. Once you get them on the towel, shape them as best you can so they look uniform and even.
SEAL HATS, GLOVES, AND SCARVES IN A NETTED LAUNDRY BAG
If you need to wash your hats, gloves, and scarves, put them in a netted laundry bag. This will prevent you from losing any of them as they go through the washer.
USE NORMAL DETERGENT FOR FLEECE JACKETS AND LONG JOHNS
Don’t be afraid to use your normal laundry detergent on your fleece jackets and long johns. They hold up rather well when being washed in the machine, and line dries them when you can. Avoid using fabric conditions.
DEODORIZE SNOW BOOTS
Deodorize your snow boots as often as needed to keep bacteria from growing and causing odors. Spray the insides lightly with an essential oil/water mix to freshen them up.
LINE DRY WHEN YOU CAN
Line dry your clothes when you can to keep the fabric from breaking down. Shake them occasionally to keep them from getting crunchy. If you don’t want to hang them outside, you can always put a drying rack up in the house. They don’t take much room and will help you dry more clothes ‘on the line.’
Caring for your winter clothes will help you maintain them without causing much wear and tear. If you end up putting some of them in storage for the summer, having them properly cleaned will prevent odors and keep them looking their best.
